Discover two of the most fascinating destinations in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where the ingenuity of an ancient civilization meets the extraordinary beauty of the Andean countryside.
This experience takes you to Moray, an impressive archaeological complex featuring enormous circular agricultural terraces that reveal the Incas’ advanced knowledge of agriculture and microclimates. You will then explore the spectacular Maras Salt Mines, a collection of thousands of salt pools that have been used by local communities for generations.
Throughout the journey, you will enjoy breathtaking mountain scenery, traditional Andean landscapes, and a closer look at ancestral practices that remain an essential part of local life. Maras and Moray offer a unique perspective on the relationship between the Incas, their environment, and the resources that sustained their civilization.
Itinerary
- Departure from Cusco: At the scheduled time, we will depart from Cusco and travel through the beautiful Andean countryside toward the Sacred Valley. Along the way, we will admire traditional villages, agricultural fields, and mountain landscapes that characterize this region.
- Moray Archaeological Complex: Our first destination will be Moray, an extraordinary archaeological site known for its enormous circular terraces built into natural depressions in the landscape.
- These concentric agricultural platforms were carefully designed at different levels, creating variations in temperature and environmental conditions. This allowed the Incas to experiment with crops and develop sophisticated agricultural techniques adapted to the Andean environment.
- As we explore the site, our guide will explain the importance of this agricultural laboratory and how its design reflects the advanced knowledge of one of the greatest civilizations in South America.
- Maras Salt Mines – Salineras: We will continue to the remarkable Maras Salt Mines, one of the most distinctive landscapes in the Sacred Valley. This impressive complex consists of thousands of small salt evaporation pools arranged along the slopes of a mountain.
- The pools are supplied by a natural saltwater spring, whose mineral-rich water flows through a network of channels into individual evaporation ponds. Under the Andean sun, the water gradually evaporates, leaving behind salt crystals that are harvested using traditional methods.
- During the visit, we will learn about the ancestral salt-production process and the importance of this activity for the local families who continue to preserve this tradition. The contrast between the white salt pools and the surrounding mountains creates a truly remarkable setting.
- Return to Cusco: After discovering these two extraordinary destinations and learning about the agricultural and productive traditions of the Andes, we will begin our return journey to Cusco, concluding our half-day experience.
