South Valley of Cusco
Half day
Cusco, Peru
Descripción
Not every journey through Cusco leads to the same discoveries. Some take you beyond the familiar paths, into places where history and tradition remain beautifully intertwined.
The South Valley of Cusco offers a fascinating journey through lesser-explored destinations that preserve some of the most remarkable expressions of pre-Inca and Inca heritage. This route combines archaeological wonders, colonial architecture, and traditional Andean landscapes, providing a different perspective on the cultural richness of the region.
During this experience, you will discover Tipón, an impressive archaeological complex renowned for its sophisticated hydraulic engineering; Pikillaqta, an ancient Wari city that reveals the urban planning skills of a civilization that flourished before the Incas; and Andahuaylillas, home to a magnificent colonial church often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of the Americas.
Beyond its historical significance, the South Valley invites you to appreciate the traditions, landscapes, and cultural identity that continue to define the Andean world.
Itinerary
- Departure from Cusco: At the scheduled time, we will depart from Cusco toward the South Valley, following a scenic route surrounded by mountains, agricultural fields, and traditional Andean communities. Along the way, we will discover the historical importance of this region and its role in the development of ancient civilizations.
- Tipón Archaeological Complex: Our first destination will be Tipón, one of the finest examples of Inca hydraulic engineering. This remarkable archaeological complex is characterized by its extensive agricultural terraces, carefully constructed stone walls, and an intricate network of water channels and fountains.
- The Incas developed an advanced irrigation system that continues to demonstrate their understanding of water management and agricultural organization. As we explore the site, we will learn how water was distributed throughout the complex and appreciate the architectural precision that allowed these systems to function for centuries.
- The surrounding landscape also offers beautiful views of the valley, making Tipón an exceptional place to appreciate the relationship between Inca engineering and nature.
- Pikillaqta Archaeological Complex: We will continue to Pikillaqta, one of the most important archaeological settlements associated with the Wari civilization, which flourished before the expansion of the Inca Empire.
- Unlike many Inca constructions, Pikillaqta features large urban sectors, long streets, residential compounds, and defensive walls built using stone and adobe. Its organized layout reveals the remarkable urban planning and administrative capabilities of the Wari people.
- During the visit, we will discover the historical importance of this ancient settlement and understand how its development contributed to the cultural evolution of the Andean region.
- Andahuaylillas – Church of San Pedro: Our final destination will be the picturesque town of Andahuaylillas, famous for its Church of San Pedro Apóstol, a magnificent example of colonial religious architecture dating back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries.
- Often known as the "Sistine Chapel of the Americas," this church is celebrated for its extraordinary interior decoration, featuring colorful murals, intricate gold leaf details, impressive altarpieces, and valuable religious artwork.
- Its artistic richness reflects the fusion of European religious traditions and Andean cultural influences. Exploring this remarkable monument offers a deeper understanding of the historical and artistic transformation that took place during the colonial period.
